What is the new horror film with Sarah Paulson released on Disney+ worth? Opinions on Hold your Breath are there.
Directed by previously unknown Karrie Crouse and Will Joines, Hold your Breath is a psychological horror film telling the story of a woman living in Oklahoma in the 1930s. Troubled by a mysterious past, she will go further than necessary to protect her children from a sandstorm.
Sarah Paulson, star d’American Horror Storyof Ratched and many genre productions, plays the lead role alongside musical actress Annaleigh Ashford and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, aka Richie in The Bear. Released on Hulu in the United States, but broadcast in France on Disney+ on October 3, Hold your Breath has already received opinions that are varied to say the least.
alors Hold your breath ?
Sarah Paulson’s new performance in a horror film is promising, but what does it mean? We review the opinions of the American press:
« In a genre invaded, lately, by scenes of “elevated horror” style, the raw and clever threat [de Hold your Breath] acts as a breath of fresh air.«
Nick Schager – The Daily Beast
« The film often overdoes it, clinging to every branch in an attempt to generate thrills, which results in a scattered result, to say the least. Nevertheless, we grant him two or three notable qualities, the first being his few moments of tension.«
Siddhant Adlakha – Variety
“Despite all the horror subgenres crammed into Hold your Breath, the film never quite manages to be scary. »
Natalia Keogan – The A.V. Club
“It is clear that the film is carried by the solid performance, as usual, of Sarah Paulson. But Hold your Breath nonetheless remains a frustrating work, a succession of strong scenes which are not linked together by enough issues for the viewer to feel involved. It’s a film full of attempts, but which never gets off the ground. »
Brian Tallerico – RogerEbert.com
“All this meaningless, empty hubbub only reminds the viewer that they are watching a cheesy horror film, which does not trust its script enough to spare itself from hackneyed tricks. »
Oliver Jones – Observer
“Sarah Paulson breathes some oxygen into a barely average script, but the film’s slow pace and lack of true horror prevent it from coming to life. »
Shania Weatherhead – Collider
“Hold your Breath is a strange beast: not enough thrills for horror fans, and no blood or gore scenes to satisfy slasher fans. Even as a classic drama, the film doesn’t really work. »
Ankit Jhunjhunwala – The Playlist
Few enthusiastic reviews, therefore, for this timidly horrific film which seems to be struggling to stand out from the crowd. With an average score of 51/100 on Metacritic, Hold your Breath gets away with a score that is not infamous but not very stellar either. But it is probably still best to form your own opinion, since the film has been available on Disney+ since October 3 2024.
