[MAJ J20] 2024 review and expectations for 2025! • SWU News • Star Wars Universe
2024 has been another year in which my passion for Star Wars has not waned.
In terms of novels, we – finally – had the conclusion of Phase II of the High Republic, a phase which, unfortunately, turns out to be somewhat shaky. If there was some very good stuff – the principle of a big battle on Jedha always excites me – like the characters, the worldbuilding, etc., we still come away with a lot of questions. Fortunately, this year also marks the start of Phase III which… is off to a promising start so far!
In terms of comics, I gave up on the regular series from the OT period a long time ago. I still read a few one-shots and those from HR. I don’t remember anything special. For video games, I still don’t have a new console, but I was very happy to see the first open-world SW AAA see the light of day! I still hope to be able to do it one day.
Although I’m a Lego fan, I rarely buy my day one sets so I admit I have difficulty keeping one in particular. However, I really like the new collection of midi-scale ships, I hope to be able to get at least the Falcon. Good surprise also for the latest R2-D2. In terms of UCS, if the Interceptor leaves me indifferent, I might be interested in Jabba’s barge, but others will come first.
But Lego is not just about sets! At the beginning of this year I successfully completed the construction of a custom Ghost UCS (design by Sean Miller) with more than 13,000 parts. I hope that some of you were able to go and admire it at the store during the summer because the result is still really impressive! And otherwise, there is also an article on SWU where I give my feelings about the overall project.
Let’s get to the mudhorn in the room, the Disney+ series. I, like many, was generally disappointed by The Acolyte. Good ideas are penalized by often cheap execution and writing that blows hot and very cold. While Star Wars in live action finally left the OT straitjacket, it risks returning there for a long time… On the exact opposite, I was not expecting, again like many, anything from Skeleton Crew and I am up to here packed! There are only two episodes left that I can’t wait to discover. Mysteries, lore, very good writing and endearing characters, it’s just a pleasure to see!
The Bad Batch has finally found the winning formula with its third season, after two firsts which suffered from a lack of issues in three-quarters of the episodes. Unfortunately it was already too late, and the series ended, certainly in style. Note that the absence of announcement in this area is surprising, perhaps a desire for savings among LFL prevented a new project from coming to fruition.
And finally, there is one more point that I think is important to emphasize, which also disappointed me this year, and that is the undeniable rotting of the fanbase (well, of the so-called fans I should say.. .). This dark side of fandom has always existed – George Lucas, now revered, was hated for a long time after Phantom Menace”>TPM – but today it is becoming more and more visible and uninhibited. It is enough that a heroine is not sexualized enough for the taste of some, that women are in the direction of a work or in the lead, for torrents of racism, sexism and other forms of hatred to flood the Internet and monopolize the top of the trends. In addition to sinking the saga in the long term, it makes me c****. C**** that as a Star Wars fan, I find myself in the same boat as these people with whom I share nothing and who probably have understood nothing about the work they claim to defend. I’m going to stop there, I could go on for a long time but if this isn’t the place for that, I wanted to say it.

What do I expect for 2025? Season 2 of Andor, which I hope will be as good as the first while correcting its flaws, continuing to practice my passion for Lego, being able to come to Cusset (again, it’s uncertain…) and the continuation of the High Republic. And of course, continue my activity within the SWU staff. Besides, I completely forgot that I had sent 2000 messages!
