It returns every third week of January to the Cinémas Studio. The Touraine film festival Desire… Desires is back for a 32nd edition with the ambition of always highlighting themes linked to desires, the place of minorities in society and gender identity.
From January 18 to 26, Tourangeaux will be able to discover more than ten cinematographic works (short and feature films) on various subjects, in addition to the various conferences and other organized events.
So, for you, here is our selection of 4 films to see for the occasion. Have a good session!
1. Moonlight – Barry Jenkins (2016)
Moonlight recounts three crucial periods in the life (9-10 years, 16-17 years and ten years later) of Chiron, an African-American from Miami, fighting against his environment and his family to live his homosexuality, trying to assert himself while remaining true to himself. This fiction is an excellent introduction to understanding the issues expressed by the Festival Desire… Desires. Moreover, the film won numerous awards including the Oscar for Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay in 2017.
Date and time of the session: Saturday January 18 at 5 p.m.
2. The Shameless – Konstantin Bojanov (2024)
We remain on a poignant story with this Bulgarian feature film nominated at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival for the Un Certain Regard competition. The synopsis: Nadira escapes, in the middle of the night, from a Delhi brothel, after stabbing to death an abusive police officer. She found temporary refuge in a community of Devadasi sex workers in South India, where she took the Indian name Renuka. There she falls in love with Devika, an emotionally fragile 17-year-old girl. A dark story which highlights the need for emancipation of women, particularly in India.
Date and time of the session: Friday January 24 at 7 p.m.
3. If I die, it will be of joy – Alexis Taillant (2024)
We’re going to come back to slightly softer works with a French film. A real ode to old age and its pleasures, this feature-length documentary shares the stories of Micheline, Francis and Yves, three elderly people who refuse to be sidelined and oppose a society that marginalizes them and infantilizes them. A very gentle way to make us see our elders in another way.
-Date and time of the session: Tuesday January 21 at 7 p.m.
4. Young Hearts – Anthony Schatteman (2024)
We end this selection with a very touching story as part of a “Young Audience” session. It’s that of Elias, 14 years old. He lives in a small village in Flanders. When Alexander, his new neighbor of the same age from Brussels, moves in across the street from him, Elias realizes that he is falling in love for the first time. He will have to face the inner chaos caused by his budding feelings in order to fully live his story with Alexander and reveal it to everyone.
Date and time of the session: Sunday January 26 at 2:15 p.m.
