In the summer of 1945, as the war drew to a close, its murderous echoes still resonated in the Burmese jungles. The Japanese imperial army, in defeat, wanders in this setting of wild beauty where melancholy and despair mingle. Among these men, Mizushima stands out. A harp player, he carries a soul imbued with music, and his instrument becomes much more than a simple object: a beacon in the darkness, a guide and a comfort.
The Harp of Burma (1956) by Kon Ichikawa is a poignant fable, a song of peace emerging from the chaos of war. This film, crowned in Venice and nominated for an Oscar, now benefits from a 4K restoration, a prelude to an event release in Blu-ray Disc edition in France.
Carlotta Films is planning this release for January 21. The edition will offer an original version in DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0, accompanied by French subtitles. On the bonus side, cinema fans will be able to discover:
- A preface by Diane Arnaud (12 min).
- The documentary “The Story of a Soldier” (24 min), directed by Claire-Akiko Brisset, specialist in Japanese visual culture
- The original trailer
