Who will be the next James Bond? The question seems to be sinking into a nest of thorns, as we learned a few days ago that the rag is burning between the Amazon/MGM studios and Barbara Broccoli, producer of the James Bond saga.

As a reminder, Broccoli runs Eon Productions, the London-based company that produces the Bond films, alongside his 82-year-old half-brother, Michael Wilson. Aged 64, she is the daughter of the historic producer of the license, Albert R. Broccoli.

Three years after the release of Dying can waithowever, there is no shortage of candidates at the gate to don the costume of the most famous spy. However, between the various parties, a fault line has gradually been created on how to envision the ideal Bond.

As well explained by Wall Street Journalthe relationship between the Broccoli family and Amazon is a clash between two worlds:

“One is rooted in old-fashioned 20th-century cinema from the guts while the other is steeped in a technology-centric addiction to algorithms and streaming statistics…”

“Content” VS “sacred heritage”

The Broccoli family keeps an iron grip on 007, approving everything from storylines to key player. And she is particularly angry against Amazon, which considers the Bond saga as “content”, when on the contrary it considers it “as a sacred family heritage”.

Indeed, Amazon executives are dreaming big, and have proposed a number of ideas to take advantage of the Bond brand for their Prime Video service. Amazon is reportedly considering a spin-off starring Miss Moneypenny, the secretary of MI6 spy chief Mr.

According to the New York Postit would even have been a question of choose a woman to play the next 007as well as more diverse options that would include lead roles homosexuals or blacks.

Barbara Broccoli, for her part, has rejected the idea of a female James Bond, although she does not object to a gay or non-white actor playing the role. On the other hand, she wants the future Bond to be a Briton.

On Amazon's side, the caricature of the spy who uses violence to achieve his ends while being a womanizer is no longer very up to date. An internal source interviewed by the New York Post even said during a strategy meeting: “I have to be honest. I don’t think James Bond is a hero.”

It's difficult to imagine a near future for the saga in this chaotic context. To make matters worse, it seems that the various parties are having difficulty communicating with each other, with Broccoli claiming to have difficulty securing a meeting with senior Amazon executives.
