Scenario, casting, sequels announced… TF1info takes stock of the progress of the incredible saga.
Do you miss the planet Pandora? TF1 broadcasts Avatar: The Way of Water this Sunday, December 22 at 9:10 p.m. But for the rest, you will have to wait a little: the release of the third part of James Cameron's science fiction saga is scheduled in France on December 17, 2025, after several postponements. Although principal filming has been completed since December 2020, the meticulous Canadian filmmaker was still finishing the special effects last February. Title, casting, casting… TF1info gives you a taste.
The title and the scenario
The film will be titled in original version Avatar : Fire and Ash (“Fire and Ashes”, editor’s note). James Cameron has already explained on several occasions that he wanted to introduce spectators to the people of the ashes, Na'vi a priori much less peaceful than the members of the people of the water of the second film. A less Manichean approach too since until now, the inhabitants of Pandora were considered as nice natives, victims of evil human invaders. If the plot of the second part was set a decade after the first, that of the third should take place in temporal continuity. For the rest, we don't know much about the filmmaker's intentions.
Le casting
Apart from one of the main protagonists who perished during the final battle of the second part, all the characters and their interpreters will be back in the third. Two A-list actors will join Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana & co. in episode 3. Oona Chaplin, who was Talisa Maegyr in Game of Throneswill play Varang, the leader of the Ash People. David Thewlis, famous for the role of Remus Lupine in the saga Harry Potterwill play Peylak, a still mysterious Na'vi. Michelle Yeoh, the Malaysian star who recently won an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Oncealso joined the adventure. But her character, Dr. Karina Mogue, will only appear in episode 4.
And after?
Barring a monumental flop, James Cameron has planned two other films, which are scheduled for release in December 2019 and 2021. The filmmaker has a very precise vision since all the scenarios have already been written. Episode 4 will take place six years after episode 3 and he has already canned some of the sequences with his young actors. He plans to resume shooting after the release ofAvatar : Fire and Ash in December 2025.

What about episode 5? During 2023, producer Jon Landau had suggested that it would take place partly on Earth, with spectators discovering the reasons which pushed humans to want to exploit Pandora's resources. Like a parable of the climate threat that hangs over the Earth today. An ambitious project that this faithful collaborator of James Cameron will never be able to discover since he succumbed to cancer last summer.
