The DC Studios film about Batman villain Clayface (Clayface), will be a somewhat special case in the superhero industry.
That’s it, the first series of James Gunn’s DCU, Creature Commandosis here, and it bodes well for the return of DC on big and small screens. Without achieving the mastery of humor, generosity and intelligence that is the first season of Peacemaker, Creature Commandos stay a little joy of energy and sensitivity as only James Gunn has the secret in Hollywood today.
Towards a (real) Batman horror film?!
Enough to give confidence in the continuation of the DCU, which continues to take shape. Indeed, it was recently announced that after Superman et Supergirlthe third feature film in the franchise, Clayfacewill be about the cult Batman villain Clayface. In the absence of a director, this feature film has a screenwriter, the brilliant Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Sermons), and a release date in the United States, September 11, 2026.
Furthermore, the Hollywood Reporter also revealed the production budget of the bouzin, described as “a horror film in the $40 million range”. 40 million is a lot for horror. For comparison, this is more than recent Smile 2 et Abigail (28 million), not to mentionImmaculate et Longlegs (9 millions).
On closer to horror blockbusters such as The Curse: the origin (30 millions), The Exorcist – Devotion (30 millions), La Nonne 2 (38 million) and Doctor Sleep (45 million), Mike Flanagan’s last film release to date. On the other hand, it’s really not much for a big screen adaptation of comics. The cheapest recent films of the genre are much more expensive than Clayface. As evidenced by Madame Web (80 millions), Blue Beetle (104 millions), Morbius (75 million) and The New Mutants (80 millions).
Let’s not even talk about both Jokeralso taken from the Batman universe, which were produced for 55 and 190 million dollars (according to JP Box-office). Real horror blockbuster or underproduction like Sony Spider-Man Universe to fill the cash drawer? Without knowing whether this is good or bad news, it is clear that Clayface is a special case in today’s Hollywood, especially in the world of superheroes. So obviously, we are curious.
As a reminder, the first real DCU film, the Superman directed by James Gunn, will be released next July 9 in our French cinemas.
