Bad news for all fans of Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU). Indeed, it would seem that Collar The Hunter which is the last SSU film for a long time. News that has the effect of a bolt from the blue within the Marvel universe.
The end of the SSU ?
Sony clearly cannot make its Marvel universe last over time. Already, at the time of The Amazing Spider-Manthe license suddenly stopped after two parts, while Marc Webb wanted to wear the Sinister Six on screen. Even further back in time, initially, Sam Raimi wanted to make a Spider-Man 4 with John Malkovich in the skin of the Vulture.
Now it's SSU's turn to bow out. Indeed, Sony has confirmed that Collar The Hunter will be the last SSU film for a long time, without giving any further explanation. So how to interpret this new admission of failure from Sony Pictures?
The SSU: a short reign
In 2018, while Spider-Man has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since Captain America : Civil WarSony, which still holds the rights to use the license for Spider-Mandecides to develop his own Marvel universe. In fact, Sony has the right to exploit Spidey's entire universe (places and characters) as it sees fit. The studio therefore decides to launch the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. A universe supposed to be darker and more mature, focusing on Peter Parker's worst enemies.
This universe, already shaky at the base due to the absence of the weaver, is therefore officially opened in 2018 with Venom. The film, despite largely negative reviews, exploded at the box office with more than $856 million revenue (for a budget of 100 million). Except that the success is short-lived.
Upon release of Venom : Let There Be Carnage (which is not helped by COVID), reality is catching up with Sony head on. The reviews are even worse, and the film makes money $506 million. An acceptable score but already evidence of a certain weariness. Things will be much worse with Morbius et Madame Webtwo artistic and financial shipwrecks. The vampire film with Jared Leto is a huge waste and only brings in $167 million of box office revenue. As for Madame Web it's the same song with only 100 million dollars recipe. Alarming scores saved by Venom : The Last Dance who managed to rise to 472 millions dollars in box office revenue.
Financial scores that logically explain why Sony wants to stop the fire. But the timing of this announcement is quite strange. Collar The Hunter is expected on December 18 at the cinema, and will therefore have to try to achieve an acceptable score in such a noxious atmosphere. Already the public does not care much about SSU, if Sony announces the end of this universe, it is difficult to see who could be motivated to go see the film of J.C. Chandor. Anyway, the first predictions are catastrophicwhich perhaps explains Sony’s decision to close everything…
A rather strange decision when we know that Fuckthe villain of Venom 3 is supposed to return, maybe even in the MCU. Likewise, at present, the Michael Keaton's Vulture is always teleported into the universe of Morbius. Elements with which the MCU will have to deal despite the cessation of the SSU…
In any case, we'll let you tell us in the comments if this is good or bad news.
Sony’s Spider-Man villain spin-off universe is dead.
‘KRAVEN THE HUNTER’ will be the final film in the SUMC universe for now.
