As the release of Superman Legacy approaches, its director returns to his unique approach to the character. And one thing is certain, it is that the result will be very different from that proposed by Zack Snyder played by Henry Cavill.

On November 1, 2022, James Gunn takes the helm of DC Studios with Peter Safran. If the second is renowned for having produced numerous horror films, the first is above all for having directed Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel, before moving to the stable opposite with The Suicide Squad. Building on his work, the 58-year-old director now finds himself at the head of the DC Comics universe in cinema, of which he will even be the main architect. In 2025, the license will be entitled to a reboot and will start from scratch with Superman Legacy directed by James Gunn which will lay the foundations for this new beginning. And more than a year before its release, the latter returns to his next feature film which will move away from the previous versions of the Man of Steel.

“All stories are relatively the same”

In an interview with Jonathan Blomberg for MovieZine, James Gunn discusses what he sees as DC Comics’ strength: variety :

One of the things I love about DC Comics is that they’ve always been able to tell different stories in different ways. They told more family stories, more adult stories, dark stories, light stories.

We have something relatively serious like Superman and something relatively comical like Peacemaker, all in the same universe. Something very adult like Peacemaker and something quite family-friendly like Superman.

Of this variety, the 58-year-old director intends to produce a new version of Superman which moves away from who had been beforeas much that of Richard Doner in the 2000s as that of Bryan Singer in 2006 and especially that of Zack Snyder with Henry Cavill in the title role. He explains:

I think being able to tell different types of stories is what makes it fun. One of the things I got a little tired of is that all the stories are relatively the same. I try to get away from it. In DC, we’re trying to move away from that.

A new cast to reboot the DC universe

It is therefore on July 11, 2025 that we will be able to discover Superman Legacy in the cinema. For the moment, the film is quite mysterious because we do not have either a synopsis or a first trailer. At present, we know for sure that David Corenswet to play Superman while Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane. On the superhero side, we will also find Nathan Fillion as Green Lanter, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony as Metamorpho, but above all Nicolas Hoult who will play the antagonist of the feature film, namely the famous Lex Luthor. In any case, we will have to be patient before discovering the final result on the big screen, but it could be that the trailer drops quite quickly according to certain rumors.
