While Nosferatu is still waiting at the cinema, this other vampire film has the right to its redemption on Netflix.
Dracula returns to the cinema
This December, the film Nosferatu will be released in cinemas, a remake of the cult eponymous film from 1922. As a reminder, it tells the story of Thomas Huttera real estate agent sent to Transylvania to make a deal with the sinister Count Orlok. This one, a vampire, takes a strange interest in Hutter’s wife, Ellen, and brings with him a supernatural threat and an epidemic in their town. This pitch will undoubtedly remind you of that of Dracula by Coppola, but that’s normal: it’s an adaptation of the same book.
Even though this new feature film has not yet been released, moviegoers are already over the moon given the visuals and its impressive cast: Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgård, Emma Corrin or even Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult. Its release will undoubtedly be an event and will end the year in style, but it will above all serve to raise the rating of vampire films, which have not always succeeded at the box office, like this last one which is all the same top 3 sur Netflix.
The Vampire’s Journey
After having made a flop at the cinema and having received only very average reviews, The Last Voyage of Demeter back up the slope on Netflix. It climbs into the top 3. If you missed its release in 2023, we summarize for you what this adaptation of the myth of Dracula is about. Directed by André Øvredal and written by Bragi F. Schut Jr. et Zak Olkewiczand adapted from the chapter The Captain’s Log of the novel Dracula (1897) by Bram Stoker, the film features Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham et David Dastmalchian. The plot follows the crew of a merchant ship, the Demeter, on a perilous journey from Transylvania to London, as they are stalked by the legendary vampire Dracula, played by Javier Botet.
As we told you, the reception of The Last Voyage of the Demeter was very divided. A portion of viewers and critics felt that it was a solid film that managed to explore a new angle of the vampire story: “Øvredal’s latest film doesn’t quite match the excellence of his previous work, but remains a solid adaptation of an often overlooked segment of Stoker’s classic,” summarizes the media THN on Rotten Tomatoes. Others were more disappointed and felt that the script and direction were not not impactful enough : “Filmmakers don’t make the most of the claustrophobia of the ship, and at the same time, they don’t give you the vast expanse of the seas either,” explains Los Angeles Times. We’ll let you form your own opinion, because as we told you, the film is on Netflix.
