Everything We Know About the Cancelled Boba Fett Movie

Boba Fett was once supposed to get his own feature film. Indeed, Disney and LucasFilm wanted to develop a film around the bounty hunter in the vein of Rogue One and of Han Solo. He would have been the 2nd stamped film A Star Wars Story. Why was the project cancelled? What would it have looked like? Here’s everything we know:

Boba fett : a star wars story ?

In 2016, while Star Wars is back in the spotlight through the postlogie, LucasFilm and Disney decide to develop the connected universe Star Wars with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Directed by Gareth Edwardsit is an adventure that takes place between the events of Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith et Star Wars IV: A New HopeThe film met with unquestionable critical and popular success. Rogue One almonds the new saga of J.J. Abramsis nominated twice for an Oscar and has grossed more than 1 billion dollars box office revenue. Then, over time, the film became a cult classic.

Building on this success, LucasFilm and Disney decided to develop another film. A Star Wars Storythis time centered on Han Solo. In 2018, Ron Howard directs Solo : A Star Wars Storywith Alden Ehrenreich in the shoes of the famous smuggler, rejuvenated for the occasion. Unfortunately, this time, it’s a shipwreck. Solo : A Star Wars Story is considered (still today) as the worst movie Star Wars of the license. The press reviews were not kind, and on the box office side, the feature film only brought in $392 million in revenue for a budget of $275 million…

A resounding failure that largely cooled the studio as to the development of other Star Wars Story. Which led to the abandonment of the project Boba Fett.

a project with josh trank

In 2014, shortly before the release of Star Wars VII: The Force AwakensLucasFilm announces the production of two alternative films. The first will be Rogue One. The second was to be Boba Fett. In fact, at the time, Disney announced that Josh Trank will take care of the production of a spin-off Star Wars. The film Boba Fett was supposed to be the second of the anthology films of Star Warsbut that honor ultimately went to Solo : A Star Wars Story. The origin story around Han Solo was also planned for a long time, but initially, in the Disney calendar, Boba Fett had to arrive before. Unfortunately, in 2015, Josh Trank abandons the project.

Chronicle

At the time, Josh Trank was still a director to watch. He had just shocked everyone with his excellent Chronicle (2012) and had not yet realized his dung Fantastic Four (2015). But it is precisely the production of the film Marvel which caused some problems with LucasFilm. Kathleen Kennedy heard about the poor production of Fantastic 4 and therefore preferred to separate from Josh Trank. After the release of Fantastic FourTrank and Kennedy would then have reached a mutual agreement that he should start moving away from the film Boba Fett. A few days after the Star Wars Celebration of 2015, where he was to announce his project Star Wars, Trank released a statement saying he had left the project.

The Legacy of James Mangold

In 2018, LucasFilm regained hope and decided to relaunch the project Boba Fett. At the time, Lucasfilm announced that the filmmaker James Mangold would take charge of the project and carry out a Rated R galactic western in the vein of his excellent Logan (2017). Not much is known about this project, other than that Mangold wanted to make a western spaghetti centered on a Boba particularly violent and meanstranded on an inhospitable planet.

Finally, the film Boba Fett was cancelled in 2018. The main reason for this abandonment was the failure of Solo : A Star Wars Story. But in addition to this financial failure, the Your approach by James Mangold scared Disney. In a podcast intervention Happy Sad ConfusedJames Mangold had stated that:

LucasFilm would never have been able to develop Baby Yoda if I had done that. There is no room for the world I wanted to imagine…

Eventually, Boba Fett was recycled into the series The Mandalorian. A surprise for all the fans, delighted to see Temuera Morrison inherit the role. The bounty hunter then returned in his own series: The Book of Boba Fett. Unfortunately, the series of Dave Filoni was very poorly received by fans. Particularly because of the change in tone around the character. In addition to some rather heavy flashbacks around the way he survived his fall into the Sarlacc, The series also made Boba Fett a benevolent crime lord on Tatooine. Rather than following Mangold’s dark and mature storyline, Disney preferred to give the character a proper redemption. Long live the Disney era…

We should logically find Boba Fett soon in the film The Mandalorian & Groguexpected on May 20, 2026.
