The DCEU is dead and buried, with a few exceptions like the series Peacemaker by James Gunn who will however have to manage his cumbersome final scene with the Justice League.
In January 2023, James Gunn, in his capacity as co-CEO of DC Studios, announced the reboot of the DC cinematic universe which had never really recovered from the failure of Justice League in 2017 and its various internal conflicts (with Ray Fisher, Walter Amada, Ezra Miller or Joss Whedon). Thus, in December 2023, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom officially marked the end of the DCEU, the last image of which will therefore remain Patrick Wilson who deliberately puts a cockroach in his hamburger…
If it was not already done, the public can therefore say goodbye to the main members of the Justice League, although the fate of certain characters and certain films is still uncertain. What will become of Harley Quinn after The Suicide Squad ? Will Shazam stick around after being spotted by Amanda Waller at the end of The Rage of the Gods ? Is it that Peacemaker will he be entitled to his retcon? James Gunn rightly gave some information on his superhero transfer window.
PEACEMAKER, WHAT A JOKE
We already know that the series Creature Commandos will kick off the new universe headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran from December 5 on the Max platform. In the cinema, we will have to wait until July 2025 and the arrival of a new Supermanwho this time will have the features of David Corenswet. And even if the film will open many doors by introducing Supergirl, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern or even Rick Flag Sr., the series that precedes it will also serve to list what the DCU will keep from the DCEUstarting with… the works of Gunn.
In any case, this is what he explained to journalist Scott Collura fromIGN with whom he recently spoke: “In Creature Commandos, you’ll hear about things that happened in The Suicide Squad or Peacemaker. These things then automatically become canon.”
Still according to the filmmaker, we must consider that no more film or character is in the game, unless we hear about it in Creature Commandos. And even for the series Peacemakerthere is a glitch. Thus, according to James Gunn, almost the entire series will be part of the new canon, “almost” being the key word in the sentence: “The truth is that almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of the Justice League… which we will sort of cover in the next season of Peacemaker. »
At the end of the first season, part of the Justice League actually appeared, for the simple pleasure of being insulted by John Cena. Beyond the joke about Aquaman and his fishy sexuality, the scene was a damning statement on the state of the gang. Batman and Cyborg were not present, while Superman and Wonder Woman were played by stand-ins. Only Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller had actually worn the costume again…
Season 2 of Peacemaker should therefore give some explanations for the disappearance of the Justice League as we knew it, unless James Gunn is simply amused by the fact that we see neither the face of the Amazon nor that of the Kryptonian to rewrite the scene to his advantage. We won’t have to wait very long to find out how he will get rid of this more cumbersome gag than expected, this new batch being announced for August 2025 on Max, about a month after the release of Superman.
