Difficult to follow Disney's decisions regarding the license Star Wars so many projects follow one another and are announced without really moving forward. At the very beginning, there was talk of making a trilogy of films and a few spin-offs, which was done with episodes VII, VIII and IX then with Rogue One et Solo. Then, many series followed one another, with jagged quality (The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, Andor…). In the meantime, there was talk of giving the keys to Rian Johnson for a trilogy, then of making a film Rogue Squadron directed by Patty Jenkins, then to make a film on the origins of the Jedi, then to make a new film with Daisy Ridley… In short, Disney is going in all directions and it is difficult to know where they are. A few days ago, they added a new trilogy project to the equation.
A new trilogy for Star Wars… again!
Let's recap the facts. At the moment, only three Star Wars films are actually in production according to Disney. The first and certainly the one that will come out the fastest is The Mandalorian & Groguwhich will bring a conclusion to the adventures of the two characters as well as those of those encountered in the linked series (Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett…). The second is a film centered on Rey Skywalkerthe character of Daisy Ridley, who should then rebuild a new Jedi order 15 years after the events of Episode IX. Finally, the third is a film directed by James Mangold (Logan…) which should take place millennia before the prelogy and tell the story of the emergence of very first Jedi. Everything else (the Rian Johnson trilogy, the Dave Filoni film, the Taika Waititi film, Shawn Levy, the Lando film, the Rogue Squadron by Patty Jenkins, the film by Kevin Feige…) was indeed officially mentioned at one point or another, but has given no concrete news since.
On the other hand, even if Disney already has far too many projects on the go, that hasn't stopped them fromannounce a brand new Star Wars trilogy. The information comes from the magazine Variety and was confirmed by Deadline very shortly after, a new Star Wars trilogy is planned with Simon Kinberg producing and writing the screenplay. The latter is particularly known for having worked on X-Men : Dark Phoenix. But where it gets interesting is thatit could well be the direct sequel to the new Disney trilogy (episodes VII, VIII and IX). Indeed, even if Variety does not go that far, Deadline does speak of possible episodes X, XI and XII and the continuity of the Skywalker saga. Of course, the project is currently only at a pre-production stage, so we will have to wait before knowing if it will join the long list of films about which we no longer have any news…
An underappreciated character might be back
In addition to announcing this famous new trilogy which will take place after the events of the last one, Disney also clarified very important information recently. Indeed, while we only expected him in his own film until now, the character of Rey Skywalker could well play a role in many other productions. In any case, this is what emerges from an article in Hollywood Reporter.
According to the latter's sources, Disney reportedly considers Rey to be “the most valuable, if not the only, cinematic tool that Star Wars currently has.”. It's difficult to prove them wrong given that the other characters in the new trilogy are very secondary and that the other “strong” characters of the extended universe have not yet been given a test on the big screen. We imagine that this statement could potentially change depending on the success of The Mandalorian & Grogu For example. Waiting for, we should therefore expect to see Rey again in several different films, and very probably in Simon Kinberg's new trilogy.
