Netflix releases a number of films and series into its catalog every week, without anyone noticing them or the platform officially announcing it. Écran Large looks back at the new features added by Netflix from November 1 to 7, 2024, films and series combined in a non-exhaustive list.
What are the films and series not to be missed this week on the streaming platform?
FALL
- Already available
- Duration: 1h47
What is it about? Traumatized by the death of her husband during an accident in the mountains, Beck lets her best friend take her on an incredible challenge, just like in the good old days: the ascent of a 600 meter high telecommunications tower, at middle of the desert. But obviously, things are going to go very badly, and they are going to find themselves stuck at the top…
Why should you watch it? It was one of the good little surprises for 2022, spotted at festivals before landing on VOD in France. First thought of as a short film, Fall was a golden operation once the studio Lionsgate got their hands on it, and decided to release it in theaters. With a small budget (3 million) and a maximum success (21 million at the box office), Fall has become a new example of crazy profitability.
Beyond the commercial aspect, this little thriller directed and co-written by Scott Mann largely succeeds in its mission. Certainly, the film gradually collapses after a spectacular first part, and abuses all the tricks of the genre. But he exploits vertigo with a certain know-howaround a very stupid but perfectly diabolical idea.
Note that the success of Fall gave wings to producers since two sequels have been announced. Fall 2 will be directed by the Spierig brothers (Daybreakers, Predestination, Jigsaw), and Scott Mann will return for Fall 3.
OSS 117: Cairo, nest of spies and Rio no longer responds
- Already available
- Duration: 1h39 and 1h41
What is it about? Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, known as OSS 117, is the French flagship in matters of espionage (“but it’s not for him to say that”). At the end of the Second World War, he will have to save Egypt and find a former Nazi in Rio…
Why should you watch it? We could spend the rest of these lines listing the most cult lines from Michel Hazanavicius's comedies (go for fun, “a dictatorship is when people are communists, already! »). The director of American Class had already made images of yesteryear his own for parodic purposes, and it is clear that he knows his classics.
What still makes today the salt ofOSS 117, is that it is less a parody than a pastiche of the spy film of the 50s and 60s, a tribute shifted in time. Hazanavicius takes up the aesthetic codes without needing to hammer home their kitsch, and lets Jean Dujardin play with his eyebrows in this happy mess. What emerges is the profound stupidity of his character, a reflection of a French pride constantly ridiculed, particularly with regard to his political ignorance.
ATTACK ON TITANS SEASON 4
- Already available
- 28 episodes of approximately 25 minutes + 1 special episode of one hour and a second special episode of 1h25
What is it about? Eren twisted and turned the world against him and Paradise.
Why should you watch it? Because it would be a shame to have watched the first three seasons, but not the last. So yes, the chaotic broadcast of this season 4 (which spanned three years!) surely discouraged more than one or one, but its arrival on Netflix allows us to put everything back on trackwith the added possibility of refreshing your memory by rewatching the first three batches, also available on the platform.
So on the program: even more titans, even more traumatic deaths, even more aerobatics and metal in the credits. The season introduces major new characters, but also reveals what's happening across the sea and everything that happened a century ago, actually offering all the answers expected since 2013. The paradigm of the series changes, as does our appreciation of Eren, who may never have been the hero of this story, and it is a much more dizzying and philosophical story that is revealed, not without some revelations that drop their jaw.
But also…
