catastrophic first reviews for Robert Zemeckis’ fantastic and experimental film

Heredirected by Robert Zemeckis and led by Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, his duo Forrest Gumpunfortunately gets massacred by critics.

Clearly, renowned directors seem to have spread the word to try to shake up the end of the year 2024. Indeed, in the midst of Ridley Scott who will return to the cinema this November 13 with Gladiator 2 and Clint Eastwood who will liven up theaters from October 30 with his Juror No. 2the first of which have been released, there will also be the new film by Robert Zemeckis from this November 6 on the big screen.

Here – The most beautiful years of our life, adapted from the eponymous comic strip by Richard McGuire, often considered unadaptable, once again promises to be a huge challenge for the director. The film aims to tell the entire history of humanity through a single fixed shot where time, characters, eras pass by… Here was presented with great fanfare during the AFI Fest on October 25 and the first opinions followed on the Internet after the screening announcing nothing glorious. Press review.

back to the past-present-future

“To see Zemeckis and cinematographer Don Burgess struggle to bring multiple lifetimes of experience together into one space, through a fixed shot, and largely succeeding in doing so is truly an achievement. »

Indiewire

« [Here] gives viewers the feeling of being an audience member of a play or, more specifically, Disneyland’s old Carousel of Progress attraction, where a revolving stage showed tourists the same living room over the decades. »

The Film Verdict

“For a film that covers such a vast period of American life, Here seems oddly light. This is not the fault of the actors, who all deliver solid work, but rather the characters who are little more than sketches. »

The Hollywood Reporter

Here de Robert Zemeckis
A whole life in a single gesture

« A single-angle drama spanning centuries, Robert Zemeckis’ Here, adapted from the comic strip of the same name, is experimental in appearance, but very conventional in its approach.«

IGN

“While there are many lyrical moments in the film, Robert Zemeckis’ lack of restraint and some questionable narrative choices spoil what should be a moving adventure. »

Screen Daily

« If Robert Zemeckis had designed Here as a museum installation rather than a film, the fixed point of view would probably have made sense. But we came to be moved, and for that to work, the camera must also provoke emotion [à travers le mouvement].«

Variety

Robin Wright et Tom Hanks dans Here
A visual style criticized

“Here is a noble experiment and a welcome dose of originality in a year full of sequels, even if it doesn’t really work on all levels. »

Deadline

« At mway of telling a story chosen by Here is a captivating idea. Problem: Here tells the most uninteresting story imaginable with inauthentic performances, superfluous subplots, a tedious non-linear structure, and visual effects that distract rather than immerse.«

Next Best Picture

« All this effort, this innovation and this ambition amount, in Zemeckis’ film, to little more than a mawkish intergenerational drama.«

And happy reviews above all!

After the big failures Holy witches et PinocchioRobert Zemeckis seems to continue his descent into hell in view of these first critical returns. With an average of only 46/100 on Metacritic (at the time of writing), Here does a little better than Welcome to Marwen (40/100) and Pinocchio (38/100); but less good than Holy witches (47/100). Nothing very reassuring, therefore, even if some critics have clearly let themselves be carried away despite the faults pointed out by the majority (the digital rejuvenation or the subplots).

Despite everything, it’s impossible not to want to be carried away by this great adventure that defies time. You won’t have to wait long since Here will arrive in our French cinemas on November 6.
