Warner Bros. announced Thursday the start of work on two new films inspired by the saga The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien. The first film, which has the working title The Lord of the Rings : The Hunt for Gollum (the hunt for Gollum), will see Andy Serkis return in the role of the creature obsessed with the ring, his “precious”.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, the Oscar-winning team behind the two trilogies The Lord of the Rings And The Hobbit, will be producers of the first feature film, while Andy Serkis will take Peter Jackson’s place as director. The film, whose screenplay will be written by the tandem Walsh and Boyens, should be released in 2026.

The announcement of Warner Bros.. comes a little over a year after the studio announced the production of “several feature films” inspired by the world of Lord of the Rings.

A multi-billion dollar franchise

The six films based on JRR Tolkien’s work to date have grossed nearly US$6 billion (more than CA$8 billion) worldwide. The Lord of the Rings : the king’s return (2003) won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture, tying Titanic And Ben-Hur for the greatest number of golden statuettes.
