This new comedy produced by Netflix and directed by a genius of American humor is being demolished by the press and the public.
We tend to rely on online reviews to judge the popularity of a film. But in the case of Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Epic, it is impossible for us to do this, which shows how completely unnoticed the new Netflix film has been.
A star in the United States, but not in France
This very first experience behind the camera of the iconic Jerry Seinfeld (hero of the cult sitcom Seinfeld) creates a true-false biopic on the creation of Pop-Tarts. These biscuits covered with icing are indeed very popular across the Atlantic, although little known in France. The fame of the American comedian is also limited here, beyond the fans of his series and his stand-up shows.
Rare fact: Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Epic did not manage to enter the top 10 most viewed films in France on Netflix. The film did not receive enough ratings on its AlloCiné profile to generate an average, and a handful of tweets were published by Internet users in French. On the US side, the comedy sparked an avalanche of devastating criticism.
Critics are divided
On the American site Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an average of 41% positive reviews from critics, and 57% from Internet users. Our colleagues from Chicago Sun-Times did not hesitate to describe Unfrosted as “worst film of the decade”although other media like San Francisco Chronicle and the Washington Post were less severe.
Among the rare French media to have devoted reviews to the film, Telerama describes this comedy as “disappointing”while Leisure TV judge “impossible” to watch this feature film to its conclusion. Alone The Parisian is less severe, with a rather benevolent review for this film described as “zany and entertaining”.
