With its cultural importance in the West, DC Comics is still trying to establish itself on the other side of the globe, and particularly in Asia where comics are much less common. Attempts that sometimes take surprising forms…

I am Japanese

At the end of the 2010s, Warner Bros. partnered with Japanese studio Kamikaze Douga to produce Batman Ninjaan animated film that saw Batman find himself transported to feudal Japan. This was a major project for the studio which was already beginning to experience some success thanks to its adaptation of Pop Team Epic and who will shortly after produce the pilot for the first season of Star Wars Visions.

With Batman NinjaKamikaze Douga above all succeeded in offering a fun and original work although based on a surprising synopsisfeaturing the universe of the superhero immersed in a world of samurai and ninjas, but whose success on DVD and VOD was probably significant enough to allow the start of a sequel.

I am a son of the rising sun

Batman vs Yakuza League actually revealed its existence to the world during this year, visibly piling on the mix of the Batman universe mixed with feudal Japan but this time including the Justice League in the uchronic adventure. Indeed, if the synopsis of the film has not yet been revealed, it clearly appears to feature a fictional version of Japan in which a “Japanese” version of the Justice League seems to be rampant.

Warner recently released a Character Trailer for their film, revealing part of the cast and their voice actor in VO, while allowing us to confirm the return of a majority of the Batfamily present in the previous opus as well as the appearance of some of the members of the “Yakuza League” at the center of the film. On this side, only Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and Green Lantern Jessica Cruz have been revealed, still on a character design created by Takashi Okazaki, artist famous for having created the manga Afro Samurai. If no release date has yet been given by Warner, more information should reach us during New York Comic-Con taking place from October 17 to 20.
