Amy Winehouse died on July 23, 2011, at the age of 27, of an alcohol and drug overdose. After her death, Hollywood quickly attempted to tell her story and several projects, including one with Noomi Rapace in the lead role, were announced, but none came to fruition. Back to Black is the first biopic centered on the singer.

The young actress Marisa Abela, known for her roles as Yasmin Kara-Hanani in the series Industry and Ellie in the series Cobra, lends her features to the singer awarded 6 Grammy Awards. Nina Gold, casting agent, had selected eight young women out of hundreds of applications for a day of auditions: “Seven of them had come dressed like Amy, while Marisa hadn’t tried to look like anyone. But Marisa is the only one who, when she looked at the camera, was Amy.
