Speaking at the Davos forum, Donald Trump said he wanted to meet his Russian counterpart “soon” to end the war in Ukraine.
Donald Trump said this Thursday, January 23, that he “would really like to be able to meet President Putin soon” to “end” the war in Ukraine which has lasted for almost three years.
“It has nothing to do with the economy or anything else. It has to do with millions of lives being wasted,” he said by videoconference at the World Economic Forum Davos, in Swiss.
“I have seen photos of what happened and it is carnage. We really have to stop this war, this war is horrible,” added the new tenant of the White House.
Threats of sanctions
This Wednesday, Donald Trump assured that he would have “no choice but to impose high levels of taxes, customs duties and sanctions on everything that Russia sells to the United States” if Moscow does not conclude an agreement with Ukraine “now”.
“It is time to FIND AN AGREEMENT,” wrote the American president on his Truth Social network, assuring: “I am not trying to harm Russia. I love the Russian people and I have always had a very good relationship with President Putin.”
-The Kremlin said Thursday that it saw “nothing particularly new” in the Republican's recent comments. But “we remain ready for dialogue, for dialogue on an equal footing and with mutual respect,” added palace spokesperson Dimitri Peskov.
On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky made obtaining real guarantees from his allies a condition for the talks, according to a publication on Telegram on Thursday summarizing an interview with the Bloomberg agency.
“The question is whether Ukraine will be alone (…) or whether Ukraine will be with its allies,” he said. Volodymyr Zelensky notably mentioned earlier this week the presence of a contingent of Western troops in the event of a truce.
