On October 9, 2024, Robin, aged 22, had his throat slit by his fellow inmate in their cell in Baumettes, in Marseille. The prosecution then speaks of an “incident” between two detainees incarcerated for cases related to drugs. The victim, without a record until then, was arrested on September 21, 2024 for false prescriptions for codeine syrup. They were to be used to make purple drank, a mixture with psychotropic properties.
This Thursday, the Radio France investigation unit reveals that the investigation carried out by the Marseille territorial crime division shows that Robin had asked several times to change cells.
Several calls for help from the victim
It is from October 4 that Robin will share his cell with his future murderer. He quickly felt in danger and asked to be kept away from him. He sent three letters to the prison management, including one on the very morning of the tragedy. He reiterated his request via the intercom present in each cell, multiple times. He even tried to be sent to solitary confinement rather than return to his cell, shortly before his death. His family, very shocked by the “laxity” of the prison management in this matter, plans to file a complaint.
Radio France also notes that the arrivals section of the Baumettes remand center, where the victim was, had nearly 120 detainees at the time of the tragedy, while the normal occupancy rate is only 62 places.
The management of the prison administration did not respond to the media's request in this matter, arguing that legal proceedings were underway. She nevertheless confirms that an internal investigation was launched in parallel.
