Whether you like the Sprint or not, it has become an integral part of MotoGP race weekends. Introduced at the start of the 2023 season, the competition format which awards points on Saturday made it possible to reveal kings of the shortened event, as well as drivers who did not use it to their advantage.
It is therefore always interesting to compare the changes that take place at the world championship when we subtract the points scored during these events, in a purely factual manner. In 2024, after twenty rounds, the Drivers' ranking would be radically different without the latter, as some of the leaders have not made it their strength.
First of all, the 2024 world champion would be called Francesco Bagnaia, but the latter would have far outdistanced Jorge Martín. A true king of the Sprint, Martin has only finished outside the top 3 four times this season in this exercise, while his rival has five retirements.
Bagnaia has never really benefited from the Sprint events in the long term, and the fight for the world championship took a turn on the Saturday of the Malaysian GP, when the latter fell while trying to defend his second position .
The Italian would therefore have more than thirty points in advance, where he was 10 behind after the outcome of their fight, during the Barcelona GP.
Between Enea Bastianini and Marc Marquez, however, that would not change anything. The two men have, in fact, scored the same number of points on Saturdays over the twenty weekends of the season. They thus have 122 units each.
For his part, Marco Bezzecchi would have finished the season with eighth place in the championship, and not twelfth. He would rank just behind Fabio Di Giannantonio who would gain two positions in the table. Maverick Viñales, who finished seventh thanks to the points scored in Sprint, would have dropped to tenth place.
