Jorge Martín, the statistics of the 2024 MotoGP World Champion
Jorge Martín became the 30th World Champion driver in the premier category and the fifth Spanish driver to achieve this feat after Alex Crivillé (1 title), Joan Mir (1 title), Jorge Lorenzo (3 titles) and Marc Marquez (6 titles) . He is the first independent rider in the MotoGP era to win the title, the last having been Valentino Rossi in 2001 when he won the 500cc World Championship. However, he is the oldest rider to claim his first MotoGP world title since the category's introduction in 2002, at the age of 26 years and 293 days. The previous record was held by Francesco Bagnaia, aged 25 years and 296 days on the day of his coronation in 2022.
Jorge Martín is the third rider to win a world title with Ducati, after Francesco Bagnaia (2022 and 2023) and Casey Stoner (2007). “Martinator” won 8 Grands Prix with Ducati and was on the podium 32 times. With 16 podiums this season, just like Francesco Bagnaia, he holds the record for the most top 3 finishes in a season by a Ducati rider.
The Spanish rider becomes the second rider to win the premier class world title having already won the Moto3 title, with Joan Mir (2020). But he is the very first former resident of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup to win the MotoGP crown.
Since the start of the MotoGP era, Jorge Martín is the fifth rider to be World Champion without having won the most victories, after Nicky Hayden (2006), Jorge Lorenzo (2012), Marc Marquez (2013 and 2017, tied with Andrea Dovizioso) and Joan Mir (2020). However, he is the first driver in history to have won more than 500 points in a season (508 to be precise).
