Moto2 Barcelona – P2: Aron Canet still above the rest

The players in the intermediate class are already competing in the last meeting of the season, on the Barcelona circuit. If the titles of world champion, and vice-world champion, have already been decided, there is still a small issue to follow throughout this weekend in Catalonia. Before this Sunday's event, Diogo Moreira is one point ahead of Senna Agius and fifteen points ahead of Deniz Öncü. Everything is therefore still possible between the three men who are also the only candidates in the running. For now, the riders are preparing to compete in P2 Moto2 in Barcelona.

Before we begin, here is a table which summarizes the known facts:

Record

This Saturday morning, the track temperature is colder than the day before in Barcelona, but the Moto2 riders have one last opportunity to qualify for Q2. To do this, it will be a question of finishing in the top-14 of the combined ranking of the two sessions.

On the chrono side, Zonta van der Goorbergh is the first to set a benchmark. The Dutchman then laps in 1:43.207, eight tenths slower than the day before. Jake Dixon and Sergio Garcia come close, but no one can get past. Halfway through the session, the RW Racing GP driver is still in the lead. He will remain at the head of the scoreboard until the end of the session.

During the last minutes of driving, Deniz Öncü took the lead by a few thousandths, and gave rise to a wave of significant improvement, during which the drivers regained their times from the day before.

Jorge Navarro was the first to dislodge Aron Canet from the top of the standings thanks to a lap completed in 1:42.416. The Spaniard, for his part, is in provisional third place in this P2, two tenths behind. Other drivers like Jake Dixon, Barry Baltus and Ai Ogura placed in the top-5 at the same time.

Determined not to leave anything to his rivals, Aron Canet responded in 1:42.262, and got back in front. No one will be able to beat this mark. The 2024 world vice-champion thus blocks first place in this third session of the weekend, as he did for the first two.
