The competition weekends are about to change to Moto2, as well as Moto3. To ensure more consistency between the running of the MotoGP Grands Prix, and those of the lower classes of the World Championship, the Grands Prix Commission has rethought the organization of the meeting sessions of these two categories in view of the 2025 season .

As MotoGP enters the final Sprint of its 2024 campaign, with the Australian GP, ​​the GPC has just approved a series of updates regarding the regulations of the other classes of the World Championship that are Moto2 and Moto3. The most important of these will be the change in format that will accommodate the meetings which animate these championships from 2025.

The success of the new MotoGP format has in fact made it possible to extend it to all Grand Prix categories. Currently, Moto2 and Moto3 have a single free practice session during each Grand Prix. This is usually followed by P1 – the first opportunity for drivers to set a time which propels them directly into Q2 – and P2, the stakes of which are identical.

At the end of these two sessions, the combined classification of the two outings on the track awards their tickets to the drivers who were the fastest.

The change made will therefore see the drivers of the lower classes take part in a free practice session, on Friday morning, before taking part in the only practice session for which the issue concerns Qualifying, on Friday afternoon. What we still call P2, in other words the Saturday morning session, will constitute a second free practice session, like the one that takes place in MotoGP just before the start of Q1.

Another slight adaptation of the sporting regulations will concern the starting procedures in the event of rain. Here again, Moto2 and Moto3 will imitate the drivers of the premier category.

On the technical side, some adjustments were also voted on by the Grand Prix Commission, as summarized in the following articles:

Art. 2.6.3.2.23 Ceiling price of the Moto3 chassis and engine:
After a fixed period of ten years, the price cap for the Moto3 chassis and engine will be increased slightly to better balance cost increases currently borne solely by manufacturers.

Art. 2.6 Moto3 spec freeze:
Following the approval of a previous request from a manufacturer to improve its Moto3 engine, the freeze on the specification of all performance parts (engine and chassis) put in place for Moto3 machines has been extended until at the end of 2026.

Art. 2.5.2 Moto2 manufacturer concessions:
The number of private test days allocated to Moto2 manufacturers benefiting from concessions increases from seven to nine.
