Four people were injured in an explosion at a gas station on South Main Street in Bellingham on Friday evening. First responders were called to the scene just before 6:10 p.m. and found four people who had sustained burn injuries from the explosion. “They were workers for the company that was doing the work here at the station,” Bellingham fire chief William Miller said. The explosion appeared to have been caused by a vapor flash fire originating from fumes inside a manhole on the premises. “It was just a flash fire in the manhole,” Miller said. No other hazardous materials were involved.Miller said two victims were transported to Providence Hospital Burn Center with critical but non-life-threatening injuries. Two other patients were also transported to the burn center in Providence for evaluation.Members of the Bellingham police and fire department joined the state Fire Marshal’s Office and code compliance at the scene.
