A report published by Global Petrol Prices revealed the African countries with the lowest gasoline prices for December 2024. All countries in the top 10 are oil producers, highlighting a stark disparity between the prices applied on the continent.
Libya, African leader in gasoline prices in December 2024
At the top of the African ranking, Libya has the lowest gasoline price, at $0.031 per liter. On a global scale, this tariff places Libya in second position, confirming its status as a country where energy remains particularly affordable.
No oil-producing country in Africa has offered a price equal to or higher than the global average rate, which stands at $1.24 per liter. This notable difference reflects economic and political dynamics specific to each state.
The report attributes price differences primarily to the tax structure applied by each country. Taxes on petroleum products vary considerably from country to country.
“Typically, richer countries charge higher prices, while poorer nations or large oil exporters charge lower tariffs”underlines the report. An interesting exception is the United States, an advanced economy that nevertheless maintains relatively low gasoline prices.
