Burt, the saltwater crocodile known for his appearance in the cult film “Crocodile Dundee”, has died at the age of 90, the Australian zoo which hosted him confirmed on Tuesday.
The reptile, which measured around five meters long, died “peacefully”, according to a press release from Crocosaurus Cove, the aquarium in Darwin (north) where it had lived since 2008.
“Burt was truly unique. He was not just a crocodile, he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures,” the zoo described.

A cinema “star”
The animal was captured in a river in northern Australia in the 1980s before becoming “one of the most famous crocodiles in the world”, the zoo said.
In a scene from “Crocodile Dundee”, released in 1986 at the cinema, Burt attacks American journalist Sue Charlton, played by Linda Kozlowski, while filling her water bottle in a body of water. The young woman is finally rescued by Mick Dundee, played by actor Paul Hogan.

The sequence uses footage of Burt “jumping out of the water”, Penny Priest, general manager of Crocosaurus Cove Zoo, told Australian media ABC. “Of course he wasn’t in the whole scene, but that’s where he got his start.”
After “Crocodile Dundee”, Burt remained in the spotlight by predicting sporting or electoral results with admittedly mixed success.
