History of the Christmas Lottery draw

The history of the Christmas Lottery, Spain's most popular draw of the year, takes us back to one of the most turbulent moments in Spanish history: the War of Independence against Napoleonic occupation. In 1812, while Spain was fighting for its freedom, the minister Ciriaco González Carvajal had an innovative idea to raise funds without increasing the tax burdenof a population already hard hit by the war. This is how the first raffle was born in Cádiz, the last bastion of Spanish resistance. would lay the foundations for what we know today as the Christmas Lottery.

Over the following decades, this print has undergone a fascinating evolution. At first, it was just one of the regular draws held throughout the year. However, its coincidence with the Christmas period created a special bond with the population. People began to see it not only as an opportunity to make money, but also as a way to share their hopes and dreams with loved ones during the holiday season.

A unique social phenomenon in the world with a significant economic impact

What makes the Christmas lottery truly special is its ability to create moments of conviviality and collective hope. In the weeks leading up to the draw, lottery administrations become meeting points where dreams and aspirations are shared. People buy tickets in groups, creating special bonds with family, friends and colleagues. This practice of share the luck has given rise to memorable stories where entire villages have won the jackpot.

The economic scale of the lottery is impressive. Millions of banknotes are put into circulation each year at a price of 20 euros each, generating an important source of revenue for the state.

The children of San Ildefonso: the voices of luck

One of the most endearing and distinctive elements of this lottery is the participation of children from the San Ildefonso school. This tradition, which dates back to the middle of the 19th century, finds its origin in the social action of the institutionwhich took in orphans and abandoned children. The clarity of their voices singing the numbers and prices became the characteristic soundtrack of the morning of December 22 throughout Spain.

The Public Treasury, the big winner

All the lots worth more than 40,000 euros must be taxed to the Public Treasurywhich will take 20% of the amount won. So, in the case of a tenth of a lottery ticket with the Gordo, 400,000 euros. You will receive the first 40,000 euros, then 80% of the remaining 360,000 euros, i.e. 40,000 + 288,000 euros, or 328,000 euros.
