TESTIMONIALS. “The pain is still present 17 years later”, the story of the families of the victims of the Chinese bazaar fire

On December 21, 2007, 8 people died in the terrible fire in the bazaar on rue Carnot. A tragedy which deeply moved Guadeloupeans at the time, and this Saturday morning, 17 years after the events, tribute was paid to the two men who sacrificed themselves by throwing themselves into the flames to try to save lives. Members of their family testify to their pain.

17 years ago, on December 21, 2007, Saïd Fadoul and René Robert Joigny tried to save lives during the fire that ravaged a Chinese bazaar on rue Sadi Carnot in Pointe-à-Pitre. Both left theirs there. Patrick Nériny, the President of the Nou a yo association, wanted to pay tribute to these two “heroes”. Laying of wreaths, speeches, on the very site of the remains of the store which caught fire in 2007.

On the family side, the pain is still intact. Françoise Osmar is the sister of Réné Robert Joigny. At the time of the fire, she was living in . She experienced the event, from a distance, through television images. She was able to return to Guadeloupe for the burial.

For its part, the Fadoul family has not recovered from the disappearance of Saïd, a well-known Pointe merchant. The tribute paid this Saturday morning was received in meditation and pain. It was his brother Badi Fadoul who spoke.

After a short homily and speeches, songs rose up in rue Sadi Carnot. Lyrical songs in response to the still acute pain of the victims' families.
