Faced with growing challenges related to global energy security, the nuclear sector is attracting growing interest from developing nations. THE Zimbabwe is now manifesting its ambition to join the circle of African countries aspiring to master this strategic technology, by relying in particular on Russian expertise in this area.
Zimbabwean authorities recently unveiled their national energy strategy, placing nuclear power at the heart of their priorities. Edgar Moyo, Minister of Energy, underlined the importance of this orientation during a press conference, specifying that the country is particularly considering the deployment of small modular reactors.
This initiative takes place in a context marked by major energy challenges. Zimbabwe is facing prolonged power cuts, while drought is significantly impacting the country's hydroelectric production. To realize its nuclear ambitions, the Zimbabwean government has established partnerships with specialized Russian companies and works closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Sidney Gatageneral director of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authoritypresented an ambitious plan aimed at diversifying the national energy mix. In addition to nuclear power, this program includes the development of renewable energies, notably wind and solar power. The objective is to increase the country's electricity production capacity from 2,000 to 4,000 MW by the end of 2025, requiring the construction of 13,000 new power plants.
