The price of a driving license in Quebec has been changed for 2025: here’s why

Just a few days before Christmas, the Legault government “unwrapped a gift” to Quebec motorists: a reduction in the price of their driving license in 2025, while a significant increase in prices was expected next year.

The Minister of Transport, Geneviève Guilbault, announced on Friday, December 20 that the payment holiday will be extended for an additional year. Without this decision, the total amount of your payment notice could have exceeded $100, after four years of paying much smaller amounts — unless you had accumulated demerit points!

Thus, holders of class 5 (automobile) and class 6 (motorcycle) licenses will not have to pay the insurance contribution that was planned.

What you need to know: Thus, the class 5 driving license will cost only $26.25 rather than the $118.41 planned for 2025. Motorists will therefore only have to pay the administrative costs and fees related to their license. In addition, this payment holiday will also apply to holders of a probationary license.

This measure will result in savings of $600 million for the entire Quebec population concerned. “This discount is possible thanks to the reduction in the amounts of compensation to be paid to road accident victims since 2020, and an increase in the yield of the Quebec Automobile Insurance Fund and the sums available therein,” can we read in the press release from the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

This leave was first introduced in 2022 due to the marked drop in road collisions during the pandemic.

In case you didn't know: Furthermore, the insurance contribution for the registration of passenger vehicles will be $64.78 in 2025. To this amount are added registration fees, taxes and fees.

For residents of the municipalities of the Metropolitan Community of Montreal, the MRC de la Rivière-du-, as well as the cities of Sherbrooke, Quebec and Gatineau, you will also have to pay a public transportation contribution of $30, then the tax on registration of passenger vehicles (TIV), the amount of which varies between $60 and $150, depending on the locality.

Regarding insurance contributions for motorcycle registration, the amount will be determined based on years of experience and type of engine capacity.
