War in Ukraine: a thousand days since the Russian invasion

Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, December 19, urged Europeans to unity, among themselves but also with the United States of Donald Trump, stressing that transatlantic cooperation was essential to move towards lasting peace in Ukraine. “European guarantees will not be sufficient for Ukraine (…) For us the real guarantees, now and in the future, are in NATO”insisted the Ukrainian president after speaking to EU leaders meeting in Brussels.

Vladimir Putin, for his part, said, during his annual televised question-and-answer session, that he was ready to meet “at any time” US President-elect Donald Trump, who recently called for a ceasefire and negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. Vladimir Putin assured that Russia was ready for “dialogue” with Ukraine, but only on the basis of “ground realities”a way of saying that his country would not return the conquered territories. The Russian president also believed that his country should have launched an attack on Ukraine “earlier” and to have been better prepared for it, ensuring that Russia was “deceived” et “constraint” to launch his offensive.
