Will DJI drones and cameras still be on sale in the US in a year? Impossible to say, but the manufacturer will have twelve months to show its credentials to the Trump administration.
Very smart is anyone who can predict today what will happen next year in the small world of technology in the United States. Donald Trump will take possession of the White House on January 20, and with him the promise of massive customs taxes on imports from China, or even import bans.
TikTok could thus disappear completely among American users from January 19, unless Donald Trump (or the Supreme Court) extends a helping hand. The future administration will also have in its hands the fate of the drones of DJI.
One year to convince
The world (and Chinese) leader in drones has one year to convince the American authorities that its products do not pose “ unacceptable risk » for the national security of the United States. A welcome reprieve for the manufacturer, who feared a ban from now on in the US. But ultimately, the national defense law passed by the Senate effectively gives DJI and its rival Autel Robotics a one-year deadline.
If the manufacturer fails to reassure, the FCC (the communications regulator) will no longer be able to authorize the operation of the internal radio antennas of drones and cameras from DJI and affiliated distributors who sell these products under their brand. It is nothing more and nothing less than a ban on imports.
DJI will therefore have to take its pilgrim’s staff and knock on the door of the next US administration. And probably engage in a discussion directly with Donald Trump, as TikTok did to plead his case. In the meantime, the manufacturer asks to know the federal agency in charge of the file “ to ensure the assessment is evidence-based ”, and a right to respond fairly to the conclusions.
