A Christmas tree floating on the water’s edge collapses, one dead and several injured

A dramatic accident occurred on Monday in Maricá, near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A giant Christmas tree installed in the bay of Araçatiba collapsed, killing one of the workers responsible for assembling it, reports the local CNN branch. Strong winds and rain are believed to be the cause of this incident.

According to G1 Globo, the victim, aged 21, as well as two other injured people, tried to get off the structure after a weather alert from Civil Defense. But they did not have time to take shelter before the 56 meter high metal tree fell. In some videos, other workers can be seen swimming to escape.

An open investigation

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene. Taken to hospital, the young man did not survive his injuries. On the other hand, the two injured people are out of danger. There are also no missing people.

In a press release, the Maricá town hall confirmed the opening of an investigation into the circumstances of this accident. She assured to provide support to the relatives of those affected. According to initial information, the company responsible for installing the tree reacted immediately to the alert but its employees were surprised by the violence and suddenness of the storm. The Christmas tree was to be unveiled on Wednesday.
