Cyclone Chido: the government decrees the freezing of prices of consumer products in Mayotte

The decree offers the prefect of Mayotte the possibility of setting maximum prices by order “applicable to all establishments in the same category of businesses”based on average prices observed before the cyclone in a representative sample of establishments.

Cyclone Chido, the most intense that Mayotte has experienced in 90 years with winds of more than 220 km/h, hit the archipelago on December 14. According to a provisional report from the Ministry of the Interior, it left 31 dead and 1,373 injured, even if the authorities anticipate a much higher number of victims.

Aid has started to arrive in the archipelago, where Emmanuel Macron is due to arrive and where the supply challenges are immense, particularly in water and basic necessities.
