A Royal Caribbean cruise passenger has reportedly died after being arrested for assaulting crew members and threatening other travelers in a fit of anger while drunk.
The 35-year-old man, Michael Virgil, died last Friday aboard the cruise ship bound for Ensenada, Mexico, according to FOX 11.
His family claims that security agents injected him with some sort of sedative.
Also according to FOX 11, the man allegedly threatened to kill passengers on board and assaulted two crew members in an angry outburst that began barely an hour after the Navigator of the Seas left San Pedro, which had as destination the city of Ensenada, Mexico.
He allegedly kicked one member of staff on board in the face and punched another.
According to the Los Angeles-based television station, a witness reported that the man was running with a crew member and allegedly jumped into a towel closet and locked himself inside.
Virgil then allegedly tried several times to open the door, as shown in a video of the altercation filmed by a passenger.
Several members of the security team were eventually able to arrest Virgil using zip ties, handcuffs and pepper spray.
He died less than an hour later.
Virgil’s family told FOX 11 this behavior was uncharacteristic of the father, who was on a cruise with his 7-year-old autistic son and his fiancée.
The cause of his death is pending an autopsy. The FBI is investigating the altercation and death.
