club legend officially retires

It’s an announcement that was supposed to come one day and which will make OL supporters nostalgic. At 41, Lisandro Lopez played the last match of his career on Saturday with the Argentine club Atlético Sarmiento and will hang up his boots. A true legend of Olympique Lyonnais with 82 goals scored in 168 matches, Licha became Gerland’s darling from his first match and with the responsibility of restoring a title to the club after the departure of Benzema and Juninho in the summer of 2009. His ability to be a leader, a decisive attacker in front of goal and a big brother to Alexandre Lacazette, today captain of Les Gones, made him a true lover of the club and loved by all. Remy Vercourtre also sent a beautiful message to him. “Beyond being an obsessed scorer, he worked a lot for the team, through his pressing, his grinta… He didn’t differentiate between the Coupe de and the Champions League, for him, it was was the same. But on top of all that, he’s a good and honest guy. When the man is good, we admire the footballer even more. This is the case with Licha, this is what makes him special and very endearing. »

Only beautiful memories

Number 9 in the back, the Argentine striker will have scored extraordinary goals, powerful strikes, celebrations full of rage with his legendary gesture: the index finger on the temple. His farewell at a press conference in 2013 brought the whole room to tears, a symbol of the attachment that the entire institution had towards him and still does today. The most beautiful memory he was able to give remains his winning goal in the final of the Coupe de France on April 28, 2012 against Quevilly (1-0) which remains ’s last coronation. He also sent a message of support to the players when they were in the relegation zone, six points from remaining and after the slap received in December 2023 against OM (3-0). After 21 years of career, Lisandro Lopez can rest with the feeling of duty accomplished and with the love of the people of Lyon.
