Sinner ‘feels like he’s grown up’ after ‘tough’ tournament

Disturbed by his pre-tournament marked by an anti-doping affair, the Italian world number 1 won his second Major of the year in New York.

After a “difficult” pre-tournament linked to an anti-doping affair, Jannik Sinner, winner of the US Open tennis tournament on Sunday in New York, explained that he “feels like he has grown up”. The world number 1 had started the US Open with controversy, after the revelation of his whitewashing by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) following two positive tests in March, with several players denouncing the opacity of the process and the feeling of a two-speed anti-doping justice system depending on their status.

No matter, the Italian won his second Major of the year in New York, eight months after the Australian Open. You can’t really compare… Melbourne came as a relief, because I was working hard to win a Grand Slam (tournament), but you’re never sure you can win one, “It was difficult here, especially because of the pre-tournament,” he said after his victory on Sunday. I feel like I’ve grown, progressed, with every game increasing my confidence level. I had a bit more pressure here than in Australia.

An authoritative winner over Taylor Fritz, swept away in three sets on the Arthur Ashe court, Sinner confided that his entourage had naturally helped him in this victory: “This title is also thanks to my loved ones who were there every day, people who have known me since childhood, my family and my team who encourage me every day. I try to always stay with them, especially in difficult times, because I know that they are a valuable help. It is always (the matter) a little in my mind. But when I am on the court I try to concentrate on my game, to manage things as best as possible. It was not easy but I think I did a great job mentally by staying present on each point.»
