The central defender died during the night from Saturday to Sunday at the age of 39. He had already fought cancer.

Former Ivorian defender and international Souleymane “Sol” Bamba, who resumed his career after battling cancer in 2021, has died at the age of 39, his former clubs announced overnight from Saturday to Sunday.

“Leeds United are devastated to learn of the death of their former captain Sol Bamba at the age of 39”the English second division team informed in a statement. “It is with great sadness that we learned this evening of the passing of club legend, Sol Bamba”reacted the Welsh club Cardiff on the social network X.

He was discovered in England

Trained and having made his debut in France, at Paris Saint-Germain, he then went on to play in Scotland, Leicester (England), Trabzonspor (Turkey) and Palermo (Italy). He made a name for himself at Leeds, where he became club captain, and at Cardiff where he played more than a hundred matches and participated in the team’s promotion to the Premier League for the 2018-2019 season.

Sol Bamba announced that he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in early 2021 while playing for Cardiff. He returned to play several months after chemotherapy for the Welsh club and then for Middlesbrough, another English second division club. He was working with the technical team at Adanaspor, in the Turkish second division, before his death.
