Regardless of the next Minister of National Education, there is one subject that can no longer be put on the back burner and which must be the spearhead of those who still believe in the school of the Republic when successive governments since 2017 have superbly ignored it: I am talking about social and educational diversity.

The observation is indeed clear: the segregation that exists today in schools is neither an impression nor a fantasy. It is experienced daily by students, their families and the entire educational community. This reality, a real “time bomb” for our society and our youth, makes social diversity a major issue in the democratization of public education.

The subject resurfaced loudly in the news on the occasion of the comments made in early 2024 by Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, then Minister of National Education, questioning public schools to justify the schooling of her own children in private education.

A form of active segregation

Let’s be realistic: the State itself contributes to this. Within our establishments, social diversity does not automatically mean academic diversity because of the options – bilingual classes, European classes, foreign languages
