It was thanks to images from Safe City cameras that these two brothers, planters by profession, were apprehended by the police. The location where Ashfaaq Magdoume was attacked in Plaine-des-Papayes, on the afternoon of Wednesday December 18, is covered by these surveillance cameras. The images allowed the police to easily note the license plates of two vehicles in which five alleged attackers were traveling.
This footage shows that at 2:29 p.m. on Wednesday, December 18, a Toyota Land Cruiser stopped at the scene. Three individuals came down and had a discussion with Ashfaaq Magdoume. Then, at 2:30 p.m., a Honda Fit stopped at the scene, and two other attackers joined them. These two vehicles were seized by the police and have already been examined by experts from the Scene Of Crime Office (SOCO) and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
The two suspects, who have been the subject of a provisional charge of murder before the Week-End Court since Saturday, remain in police cells. Faced with the facts concerning the attack on Ashfaaq Magdoume, they exercised their right to silence in the presence of their lawyers, Naushad Paurobally and Ridwaan Toorbuth. Nevertheless, they agreed to undergo an identification session.
A witness positively identified them and detailed their role during this fatal attack. Police are still searching for three other suspects in this investigation.
Ashfaaq Magdoume, also residing in Jaypal Lane, was the victim of a brutal beating. His attackers, without any mercy, beat him all over his body. “Everywhere you go, it’s all there,” said Noorjahan, his mother.
The police are deepening their investigation to determine the exact causes of this fatal attack. However, police have information that the victim was targeted for revenge. In this northern village, the young man is far from being an altar boy.
On December 20, 2023, a man and his wife, aged 68 and 59, were sleeping soundly in their house in Plaine-des-Papayes when they were surprised by a trio of masked criminals armed with sabers. After injuring the husband, the thieves took away jewelry, Rs 10,000 and cell phones. According to the couple, who filed a complaint with the police, the total value of the loot amounts to Rs 28,000.
Ashfaaq Magdoume and his accomplices were arrested in this case. During his interrogation at the time, he confessed to his crime. A sum of Rs 1,225 from this violent theft was found in his possession. He also explained that he had sold the cell phone and a camera belonging to the couple to an unknown person in Karo Kaliptis, Roche-Bois.
