According to a recent INSEE study, the age at which the French reach their peak wealth is now 75, compared to around 55 in the 1990s.
The evolution of the age of peak wealth
According to a recent INSEE study, the French are reaching their peak of wealth at the average age of 75, a notable increase compared to the 1990s, when this peak was reached around age 55.
The factors that explain this discrepancy
Several elements can justify this discrepancy. The increase in life expectancy has delayed the transmission of inheritances. In fact, nearly 53% of inheritances take place after age 70. In addition, retirees now benefit from higher pensions and experience a more stable economic situation, which thus reduces their precariousness. Finally, the sharp rise in real estate prices has increased the value of the assets of previous generations.
The decline after age 75
However, this accumulation of wealth does not last forever. After age 75, expenses related to dependency, such as medical costs, housing adjustments or retirement homes, begin to weigh on assets. On average, wealth continues to grow until age 50, a period when careers reach their peak and family responsibilities decrease with the departure of children. It remains stable until age 75 before starting to decrease.
