GRDF unveils the results of the first edition of its barometer dedicated to the perception that residents of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region have of green gas.

With 6 methanization units in service in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, this study reveals a clear progression in the perception and knowledge of this energy by the region's inhabitants. In fact, 77.9% of those questioned have a positive image of this sustainable and local energy. This citizen support supports growing energy development driven by a dual necessity: the decarbonization of and its energy independence.

“From knowledge comes support and green gas is no exception to this rule! » underlines Olivier BRESSON, Deputy Director Territorial Customers of GRDF Sud-Est While the green gas dynamic continues in the region, this energy is increasingly known and popular. 77.9% of residents of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur have a positive image of green gas. In the , this figure stands at 82.2%.

This appetite for green gas and this positive a priori can be explained by the ecological advantages which are now better known to the general public. Indeed, for 77.9% of the region's inhabitants and 79.4% in the Alpes Maritimes, green gas is a renewable energy produced from the recovery of biodegradable waste.

Green gas is now identified as a real lever for decarbonization and qualified as energy produced in France (67.5% in the region and 68.2% in the Alpes Maritimes), energy injected into the network for local consumption (59% in the region, 62.6% in the Alpes Maritimes) and energy for the future (70.3% in the region, 73.8% in the Alpes Maritimes). This image is also more positive among current gas users who reaffirm the recognized qualities of gas energy, that is to say comfort with homogeneous heat and competitiveness.

Certain subjects, particularly technical ones, such as dual-energy systems or hybrid heat pumps (HPs), still suffer from a lack of knowledge on the part of the general public. In fact, only 57.4% of people know that green gas is compatible with any gas boiler (69.1% among current gas consumers), and slightly lower in the Alpes Maritimes. Work therefore remains to be done to always better inform and convince a greater number of people to consume green gas because if 61.8% of people say they are ready to consume green gas (87.8% among current gas users and 65 .4% in the Alpes Maritimes), this will be provided in particular that this green gas is not more expensive than fossil gas (only 24.7% affirming that they would be ready to pay 10% more for a local and renewable gas ).

Finally, the survey reveals that residents are inclined to participate in the energy transition because 88.1% of them are ready to sort their waste to participate in the production of green gas in France (in the Alpes Maritimes, 87.9 % of respondents say they are ready).

THE GREEN GAS DYNAMIC, A REALITY IN PROVENCE-ALPES-CÔTE D’AZUR

6 methanization units are already in service in the region producing 76GWh/year, the equivalent of 19,000 homes heated with gas via the methanization of bio-waste or sludge from wastewater treatment plants.

In total, nearly 40 projects are maturing in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region for a total production capacity of nearly 1 TWh per year, the equivalent of 250,000 new homes heated with gas.

GREEN GAS A VECTOR OF ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

Still according to the survey, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, 2 out of 10 households use gas as their main heating energy. In a highly tense energy context, the waste-to-green gas sector therefore stands out as an essential response to this sovereignty issue.

Olivier BRESSON, Deputy Territorial Customer Director of GRDF Sud-Est
“Given the climate emergency, the results of this study are stunning: here, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, nearly 8 out of 10 inhabitants are won over by green gas. Yes, it is possible to do without fossil gas in your boiler. Green gas, made from local waste, is a decarbonization solution well identified by consumers. And that’s good: in this region, the dynamic is strong. And everyone can act by choosing green gas, made in France, from their supplier on the government website: energetic-info.fr »
