To boast of his economic results, Javier Milei does not hesitate to use eye-catching videos on social networks. But what do we know about the Argentine president's record, one year after coming to power?
Certain indicators prove Javier Milei right. Inflation has fallen drastically in the country. After reaching 25.5% per month at the end of December 2023, it is now at its lowest level in three years (2.7%). Another argument in its favor is that the country has a budget surplus for the first time since 2008. This success is largely due to its chainsaw policy: brutal cuts in state spending.
However, this austerity treatment has led to an increase in the unemployment rate. Plus 24% between 2023 and 2024 with jobs lost, both in the public and private sectors. At the same time, some state aid has been reduced. In particular, the cost of a metro ticket increased sevenfold. As a result, the poverty rate rose from 41.7% to nearly 53% during the first six months of Milei's presidency.
