Amnesty International denounces the use of “imprecise weapons” by Lebanese Hezbollah against civilian areas in Israel
The NGO Amnesty International accused Lebanese Hezbollah on Friday of targeting civilian areas in Israel with “imprecise weapons”during the last conflict between them, stopped at the end of November by a ceasefire.
“Hezbollah’s irresponsible use of unguided rockets has killed and injured civilians (…) and Israel »declared the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, in a press release. “The use of these inherently inaccurate weapons in or near populated civilian areas constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law”she added. Amnesty also points to several Israeli violations during the conflict, including airstrikes “illegal” having killed “49 Lebanese civilians”to be investigated as “war crime”.
A truce between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect on November 27 in Lebanon, putting an end to a conflict – started in October 2023 – which decapitated the Lebanese formation and left more than 4,000 dead in Lebanon. In its report on Friday, the NGO details how Hezbollah fired salvos of unguided rockets at Israeli cities such as Haifa, Tiberias, Acre and Safed for several months.
“Amnesty International documented three rocket attacks carried out by Hezbollah against civilian areas in Israel in October 2024, which caused the death of eight civilians and injured at least 16 others”according to the NGO. “Direct attacks against civilians and civilian objects (…) must be investigated as war crimes”dear Mme Callamard.
Hezbollah mostly claimed to target military targets, but in some statements it said it targeted civilian areas. “in response to Israeli attacks against civilians”. Despite the announcement of the ceasefire, more than 20 people have been killed in Lebanon by Israeli strikes since November 27, according to a report from Agence France-Presse based on data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Both Israel and Hezbollah accuse each other of repeated violations of the truce.
