The alleged murderer of Daphnée Jolivet sent to an adult prison

Detained in a youth center since his arrest when he was 16, the alleged murderer of Daphnée Jolivet will be transferred to an adult prison. The CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale, which manages the youth centers, made the request a few days after the accused turned 18.

Technically, a teenager detained while awaiting trial can remain in a youth center until he turns 20, unless he poses a security risk.

Daphnée Jolivet was killed in her residence in the Maizeret district of Quebec on October 25, 2023. The teenager who is accused of her first degree murder also faces a charge of sexual assault with a weapon.

The lawyer of CIUSSSMe Geneviève Bertrand, presented to the judge on Friday the reasons why the young accused should be transferred to an adult correctional establishment.

The young man's new lawyer, Me Gabriel Michaud Brière, opposed it, in vain. Judge José Rhéaume, of the Youth Chamber, accepted the CIUSS’s request.

The evidence presented at the hearing and the reasons given to motivate its decision are subject, for the moment, to a publication ban.

In addition to the charges related to the murder, the young man faces other counts for events that occurred since his arrest.

Riot

He is, among other things, accused of having participated in a riot at the Le Gouvernail rehabilitation center, in the Beauport district, on October 13.

He then allegedly committed an armed assault against a peace officer and faces two additional counts of assault causing harm.

The young man had also escaped the surveillance of officials during his detention in May. The event occurred while he was traveling, unhandcuffed, between the Le Gouvernail youth center and the hospital.

The teenager allegedly used a homemade weapon to threaten his two supervisors before fleeing.

He must return to court in February for all of his cases.
