After the fire in the Deneuzière squat which occurred on the night of December 2 to 3, the municipality of Caluire-et-Cuire gave its agreement to the City of Lyon, owner of the building, to partially destroy the building.
On the night of December 2 to 3, a woman lost her life in the fire at the Deneuzière squat in Caluire-et-Cuire and several injuries were also reported. More than two weeks after the tragedy, the town hall of Caluire-et-Cuire gave its agreement to the City of Lyon, owner of the building where the squat was located, to partially destroy the building.
The other part of the building “probably doomed to demolition”
According to Le Progrès, the partial demolition was finally undertaken on December 17 due to the risk of the building collapsing. The City of Lyon also clarifies to our colleagues that if only part of the building was destroyed, “the other part, undoubtedly destined for demolition, is at this stage secured and guarded.” As a reminder, the people living in the squat had been sheltered at the Lachaise gymnasium in Caluire. 47 people out of the 116 inhabitants of the squat were offered “a few nights in a hotel.” The others, for their part, were put back on the street without any accommodation solution.
Several groups were outraged by this decision. “The residents and their support then gathered in front of the prefecture to demand lasting solutions, before being killed by dozens of police officers and controlled by the Border Police, in contempt of their right to demonstrate. Three people were arrested. The death of their friend, the trauma and injuries of the fire, the loss of their place of life and their business, did not stop the State in its repressive, racist and murderous madness. We are stunned by this violence and demand respect for the victims”they denounced in a press release on December 6.
