Traveling to Scotland this Tuesday evening, Portugal had a very forgettable evening. Although winners in their first three matches in this League of Nations, the Seleção this time did not manage to gain the upper hand over the Scots who had only known defeat so far (0-0). Qualification for the quarter-finals will have to wait a little longer.
This Tuesday evening in Glasgow, Portugal failed to record a fourth victory in a row in this Nations League. Faced with a Scottish team which had not collected a single point until now, Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates lacked realism, solidity, fantasy, in short, almost everything.
In his starting line-up, Roberto Martinez made six changes compared to the match against Poland (1-3 victory). Francisco Conceição and Diogo Jota accompanied Cris in attack, João Palhinha and Vitinha lined up alongside Bruno Fernandes in midfield, while João Cancelo and Antonio Silva started in defense. But despite a solid eleven, the goals were lacking.
When we only think about the result, it can indeed denote the three previous ones. But we must still remember that the first two victories, against Croatia and the same Scotland, were far from being clean and flawless (twice 2-1). Ditto against Poland, where despite two goals in advance, the Seleção conceded the reduction of the score, scared themselves and only really secured the three points in the 88th minute. This sad 0-0 is ultimately not so different.
At the same time, Croatia conceded a draw against Poland (3-3) and remains three points behind Portugal in the ranking. Robert Lewandowski’s squad is six points behind and can still dream of qualifying for the quarter-finals. Remember that this year, there are two teams who advance to the next round of this Ldn. Next month, Portugal host Poland at the Estádio do Dragão (November 15), before traveling to Croatia for their sixth and final match (November 18).
