“Everyone survived and was taken to hospital for a health check,” local police chief Ardyan Ukie Hercahyo said in a statement.

The crash could have been fatal. A plane carrying 48 people went off the runway Monday in the Indonesian province of Papua, injuring several passengers, police said.

The ATR-42 aircraft of the airline Trigana Air, bound for Jayapura, the capital of the Indonesian province of Papua, left the runway during its takeoff phase at an airport in the Yapen Islands. Forty-two passengers and six crew members were on board the aircraft.

“Everyone survived and was taken to hospital for a check-up.”local police chief Ardyan Ukie Hercahyo said in a statement. Local emergency services told AFP that several people were injured in the incident.

A first crash in 2015

In 2015, a Trigana Air plane crashed in Papua, killing all 54 people on board. The Southeast Asian archipelago, which relies on air travel to connect its thousands of islands, has a history of air crashes. Flights in the mountainous province of Papua are often disrupted by weather.
